PILE

(1975)

The following objects are arranged on a shelf-block that is affixed to the wall: on the left, a white podium with a vertical black plank attached to it. The plank has a white mark 15 cm above the podium. On a base to the right of the podium is a notebook for taking notes. An instruction sheet is attached to the wall above this base. On the wall to the left of the instructions is a box of blank certificates.

The instructions invite those wishing to take part in the action "Pile" to place onto the podium any object (no larger than a matchbox) that they have on their person at the time of the action. Then, the participant is to make an entry into the notebook, entering the following information: 1 – item number; 2 – date of participation in the action; 3 – family name; 4 – the name of the item placed on the podium. The participant is then given a certificate that confirms his participation in the action.

The instructions indicate that "the action will end when the top of the pile reaches the white mark on the ruler."

The first "Pile" was realized under domestic conditions from December 12, 1975 to March 18, 1976. The number of objects placed onto the podium was 87. The number of participants was 44.

The second "Pile" was realized under exhibition conditions (“Apartment exhibition” on Leninsky Prospekt) from May 14 to May 23, 1976. 106 objects were placed onto the podium, and the action had 106 participants.

The third “Pile” was realized in the context of an exhibition by Yu. Albert at Vinzavod in 2008, from July 3 to July 28. The number of participants was around 500.
